Roy Minarai is an award-winning American ceramicist specializing in handmade bonsai and kusamono containers celebrated for their adventurous use of color and form. He came to ceramics in 2015 through his love of bonsai, teaching himself glaze chemistry and drawing early inspiration from contemporary Japanese potter Shigeru Fukuda ("Bushuan"), whose work descends from the legendary Heian Tofukuji. Every piece is slab-built entirely by hand and finished with glazes he develops in his own studio through an obsessive process of testing, layering, and refining — giving each container its singular, one-of-a-kind character.

In just a few years, Minarai has risen to remarkable prominence in the world of bonsai pottery. At the 2019 Gafu-ten exhibition in Kyoto he took second prize in the glazed category, becoming the first Western potter ever to earn such an honor — a stunning accomplishment for an artist who had started making pots only a few years earlier. He went on to win the silver prize at the 14th Contemporary Kobachi Artist Exhibition in Japan, and his reputation now extends worldwide — one leading authority has called him "America's most talked about potter," praising his world-class glazes. In 2025 he served as an in-person judge for the North American Bonsai Pottery Competition. With production kept intentionally small and much of his time devoted to commissions, a Roy Minarai pot is a coveted, collectible home for a treasured tree.

Workshop FAQs

No. Our events are ticketed per person, not per tree, so everyone attending must have a ticket. This is because space is limited in our venues and we need to be able to sell tickets for every seat we have available. If someone takes a seat in our space without having purchased a ticket, that means someone who purchased a ticket may not have a seat. Thank you for understanding.

Maybe! We want everyone of all ages to get to enjoy the fun of tiny trees. Luckily most of our venues are family friendly and allow those that are underage to enter with a parent/guardian. Please see the "UNDER 21 POLICY" listed above or contact the venue directly.

We had an amazing time and now my husband is bonsai obsessed! He's been researching and watching videos, and every walk he is looking out for more trees that would be good to bonsai. This was the perfect introduction to a new hobby! Y'all were so knowledgeable, funny, and inspiring. We hope to make part 2 in 9 months or so. Thank you!

I had a great time at the most recent Bonsai Bar event. The class was fun and informative. The instructors were very hands-on and you could tell they truly enjoyed what they were doing. If you are interested in getting into bonsai this was a great place to start. I could not have been happier with the entire experience.
